APEDA and FSSAI Certifications for Spice Export from India: What Importers Must Know

When you buy spices from an Indian exporter, certifications are not just paperwork — they are your guarantee of safety, legality, and quality. Two certifications stand above all others for spice exports from India: FSSAI and APEDA registration. Understanding what these mean and why they matter will help you choose the right supplier and satisfy customs authorities in your country.

What Is FSSAI?

FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is the government body responsible for regulating and supervising food safety across India. Any business that manufactures, processes, stores, distributes, or exports food products in India is required to hold an FSSAI license. For spice exporters, an FSSAI license confirms that the production facility meets India’s food safety and hygiene standards, the products are processed and packaged in a certified environment, and the exporter is legally authorised to trade food products. An exporter should always hold a Central FSSAI License.

What Is APEDA?

APEDA stands for the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. It operates under India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry and was established specifically to promote and develop the export of agricultural and processed food products — including spices. APEDA registration is mandatory for any Indian exporter selling agricultural products internationally. An APEDA-registered exporter is legally permitted to export spices from India, can issue an APEDA certificate recognised by customs in most importing countries, and is eligible for government export incentives.

ISO 9001 — Why It Matters for Spice Buyers

ISO 9001 is an internationally recognised quality management system standard. When a spice exporter is ISO 9001 certified, it means their processes — from raw material sourcing and cleaning to processing, packaging, and dispatch — are standardised and audited regularly by an independent third-party body. This is particularly important for buyers who need consistent quality across multiple shipments. An ISO-certified supplier cannot cut corners on quality without risking their certification.
